A Journey Of Breakthroughs and Bold Ideas
Our journey in insulation goes back well beyond Liatris’s founding in 2018. In 1992, Arthur Yang won the first government grant awarded for aerogel insulation commercialization, a $4.5 million Advanced Technology Program award. It was on that same project that Frank Yang, then a middle school student, developed an interest in energy sector innovation through helping edit Arthur’s funding applications and technical publications. Nearly 30 years later, after Frank Yang had gone on to help scale up one of the largest solar manufacturing plants in the US, the two teamed back up to address the still vastly under-addressed market of building energy efficiency technology.
Better insulation to make heating and cooling cheaper
With Arthur’s R&D expertise and Frank’s deep commercialization and scale-up background, the two brought together a founding team that shared a “Manhattan Project” level of focus and urgency toward making the built environment more affordable, comfortable, and safe through energy efficiency.
Since starting from the Bethesda Green incubator and a part-time employee’s garage in 2018, Liatris has demonstrated the highest-performing insulation prototypes in the industry while expanding its lab in Rockville, Maryland into a cutting-edge 10,000 sq. ft. R&D and pilot production facility. Liatris has raised over $10 million in corporate and government R&D funding while utilizing a novel “capital-light” business model to establish partnerships with incumbent insulation manufacturers.
